An optometrist is a doctor who’s primary study is concerned with the eyes. In the United States, all students studying to become optometrists are held to a strict set of regulations. They are required to continue their education even after being certified in order to stay in touch with any and all current standards relating to the care they provide. Two of the main organization of optometrists are the American Optometrist Association and the American Optometrist Society. These groups represent all optometrists throughout the United States.
Like all other courses of study, San Diego Optometrists must first complete a four year bachelor’s degree. After they complete these four years, they must then score well enough on the O.A.T., or Optometry Admissions Test, in order to be admitted into a graduate program. These aspiring doctors must then complete a four year post-graduate degree program where they will receive training in the classroom and in a clinical setting in order to obtain their doctorate degree.
This is not the end of a future Optometrists journey toward their profession. After completing the program, they must pass a national examination that is given by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. This is a three part examination that covers each aspect of Optometry. Some will then go on to complete a one or two year residency where they are further trained in the specifics of their field. They are then recognized as, what some may feel to be, a true Optometrist, but, as stated earlier, they must continue their education in order to stay current on topics within their field.
With all Optometrists have to go through in order to be certified, patients can rest assured that their chosen doctor knows what they are talking about. Also, with the continued study these doctors have to perform, they continue to learn more about their line of work, and thus become better and more advanced in their field. It’s a reassuring thought to know these doctors are working hard to help keep us and our eyes healthy.
